Previously, O’Mahoney had always managed IT security himself in-house, both at Turpin Distribution and in his previous jobs with other companies. However, as he and his colleagues investigated different IT security options from multiple vendors, they became very attracted to the idea of an externally-managed service. “The more we looked into different security solutions, the more we started to see the appeal of a managed security service, with experts on hand to assist us,” he says.
As the evaluation of security solutions continued, Redscan’s managed Unified Threat Management (UTM) service soon emerged as the favourite. The IT team liked the fact that Redscan offers multiple layers of protection from a single device, called the Redscan Service Delivery Platform (SDP). The UTM service encompasses email filtering, spam management, web cleansing, web site access control, intrusion detection and integrated firewall. The solution also provides secure routing to and from the company’s US office, over a virtual private network (VPN).
Getting up and running with the Redscan UTM solution was very straightforward. Redscan preconfigured the SDP device as far as possible in advance and then came on site to complete the installation. During that initial contact – and ever since – Turpin Distribution has found the technical experts at Redscan to be very helpful. “Over the years, they have often delivered more than they are contracted to,” O’Mahoney says. “They are very responsive. I can’t think of an occasion when I’ve had to chase them up for anything.”
